The international initiative connects Rhode Island and Israel through BlueTech innovation, positioning CEED as a key research resource for industry, startups, and government agencies.
BRISTOL, R.I.- Roger Williams University and its Center for Economic and Environmental Development(CEED) were highlighted during the Jan. 6 online launch of the Rhode Island-Israel BlueTech & Aquaculture Committee, a new initiative of the Rhode Island-Israel Collaborative(RIIC) focused on strengthening innovation, research, and industry partnerships between the two regions.
The event opened with remarks from Avi Nevel, President, CEO, and Founder of RIIC, followed by U.S. Congressman Gabe Amo, who specifically recognized RWU's role. Greetings were also delivered by Benny Sharoni, Consul General of Israel to New England, and Stefan Pryor, Rhode Island Secretary of Commerce.
The committee, chaired by Toby Stapleton, Director of the Blue Venture Forum, brings together senior leaders from government, industry, and research organizations in Israel and the United States. Notably, CEED is the only university-based research team represented in this initiative.
Committee members shared brief remarks highlighting their organizations' roles in advancing BlueTech and aquaculture innovation. RWU Associate Professor of BiologyGalit Sharon presented CEED's mission and applied research model, highlighting its industry partnerships, extension work, and integrated research divisions that support aquaculture, marine health, and sustainability.
Being a member of this committee positions RWU as a primary academic partner for industry leaders, startups, and government agencies in both countries. It expands opportunities for funded research, innovation, student engagement, and international exchanges while elevating CEED's leadership in the global blue biotechnology sector.
Other committee members include Roy Avrahami, Chief Innovation Officer of the Ashdod Port Company; Hila Ehrenreich, Chief Executive of the Israeli National Center of Blue Economy & Innovation; Ashley Medeiros, Director of the Ocean Tech Hub at Rhode Island Commerce; Ben Sorkin, Chief Executive Officer of Bristol-based Flux Marine; and Roni Sussman, CEO and Managing Director of AquaculTech.
