Removal of the I-84 Eastbound Exit 21 Off-Ramp in Waterbury

6/05/2026

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing the start of improvements along I-84 eastbound, including the removal of the Exit 21 off-ramp structure (Bridge No. 03191F) and extending the auxiliary lane from the Route 8 northbound ramp to the Exit 22 off-ramp in Waterbury starting on Monday, June 15, 2026.

The purpose of this project is to improve safety and traffic operations by reducing congestion on I-84 eastbound in the vicinity of Exits 19 through 22. By removing the Exit 21 off-ramp from I-84 eastbound and extending the auxiliary lane, drivers will have more space to merge onto and exit from I-84 eastbound.

CTDOT Project No. 0151-0340 was awarded to Manafort Brothers, Inc. at a cost of $20,798,700.00 on January 16, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2028. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District No. 4 in Thomaston.
