07/11/2025 - Fones Rd Nighttime Work Continues

Building a Safer Street for Everyone
Nighttime Work Continuing into August

Last month, crews began night work to complete underground utility work north of the Woodland Trail. This work has taken longer than anticipated due to unexpected private facilities. We now expect nighttime utility work to continue until mid-August. Crews will continue working between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The work area includes Fones Road between the north entrance of Home Depot and Pacific Avenue SE.

Construction activities involve digging into the roadway, along the edge of the road, and into nearby driveways. Steel plates are being placed as needed to maintain driveway access, but if any temporary driveway closures are needed, residents and businesses will still be notified one day in advance.

The Karen Fraser Woodland Trail will remain open with an adjusted trail crossing on Fones Road. Please follow posted signage and use caution when crossing Fones Road or use this detour route.

Upcoming Puget Sound Energy (PSE) Work
Additionally, beginning July 14, PSE will begin conversion of the current overhead electrical system to an underground system along Fones Road. Community members can expect to see PSE crews working during regular daytime work hours.
Use Alternate Routes
Work on Fones Road will become increasingly more complex as multiple crews move forward project tasks. It is highly recommended that drivers use alternate routes. This will help ensure the safety of work crews and people that live or work on Fones Road.

If you must use Fones Road drive slowly.

Project Background
This project will transform Fones Road into a safer corridor. It will add sidewalks and crossings for pedestrians, separated bike lanes, an improved trail crossing, improvements for vehicle flow and truck access, and lighting.
