November 15, 2025 | 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The Harper House, 1430 Bartow Road, Sandersville, Georgia 31082

Sandersville, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation and the Forest Grove Preserve invite the public to explore Georgia's past at a free, family-friendly Public Archaeology Day held Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the historic Harper House in Sandersville, Georgia.

This special event will highlight recent archaeological discoveries from the excavation of a tenant house along Bartow Road, offering new insights into the daily lives of people who lived and worked in rural Georgia over the past 150 years. The Harper House, a beautifully restored, century-old sharecropper dwelling, provides the perfect setting to experience how archaeology connects us to the people and stories of our shared past.

Families will have the opportunity to:
  • Explore artifact displays and archaeological equipment used in the field;
  • Watch short documentary videos about the excavation process;
  • Join guided tours of the historic Harper House; and
  • Enjoy hands-on archaeological activities for all ages.
Through these experiences, attendees will discover how archaeologists and historians work together to reconstruct the lives of ordinary Georgians who worked the land as tenant farmers and sharecroppers, revealing stories of resilience, adaptation, hard work, and community.

This free event welcomes visitors of all ages, families, students, and history enthusiasts alike. Join us for a day of discovery and connection as we uncover Georgia's past, one artifact at a time. Note: The event will be filmed for educational and outreach purposes.

Hands in the Soil: A Public Archaeology Day, Discovering the Stories of Tenant Farmers is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Forest Grove Preserve, with additional support provided by New South Associates.
