Josh Filzen, professor and director of the Master of Accountancy program, recently had the case he co-authored, "Predicting Future Sales: A Quantitative Sales Forecasting Case," published in Issues in Accounting Education.
Filzen's case offers students a hands-on approach to data-driven decision-making, giving them a chance to take in more information than simply reading a textbook. It allows students to download and manipulate real-world data, apply statistical software commands to generate forecasts, and assess whether the model's predictions are reasonable for a chosen company. The case emphasizes six core skills: building datasets, using correct software syntax, manipulating data, predicting outcomes with regression, analyzing results, and communicating findings in writing.
Designed for use across all levels of higher education, the case can be applied to financial statement analysis, budgeting and data analytics. Participants have responded positively to the exercise, with student feedback showing the objectives were met.
