The shootings involved the Edmonton Police Service and, separately, the RCMP near Cold Lake.

In both cases, the Police Review Commission directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, Level 1 matters include incidents involving serious injury or death, or serious or sensitive concerns about an officer's actions.

Edmonton Police Service shooting

On June 26, 2026, police responded to multiple reports of crashes involving a man driving a black Jeep in south Edmonton, including a collision with an Edmonton Fire Rescue Services truck shortly before midnight.

Witnesses told police the man had a weapon.

Officers later found a damaged vehicle matching the description from the earlier incidents in the open garage of a home in the Cavanagh neighbourhood.

After police obtained a warrant, officers gained entry to the home and were immediately met by a man near the doorway who was advancing quickly towards them and appeared to be carrying weapons.

During the confrontation that ensued, one EPS officer fired a service weapon, striking the man.

Officers then provided first aid until paramedics arrived. However, the man died at the scene. No police officers or other emergency services personnel were injured.

ASIRT investigators are reviewing evidence from the scene.

Investigators continue to seek anyone who was in the area of Christie Vista S.W. in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026, or who may have video recordings of the shooting incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact ASIRT at 780-644-1483.

RCMP shooting near Cold Lake

On June 25, 2026, the RCMP received a 911 call shortly before 5 p.m. regarding a man who was reported to have assaulted one woman and threatened to kill her dog at a rural property near Cold Lake. Police were also advised that a loaded firearm was present on the property and near the reported incident.

The first arriving RCMP officers secured the area. Officers then used a drone to watch the man from a distance while trying to contact him.

RCMP emergency response team officers later arrived at the property. Crisis negotiators contacted the man by phone, and police spent several hours trying to get the man to surrender.

Based on the information available to police at the time, they believed the man was approaching a vehicle with a loaded firearm and may attempt to leave the property. At that point, officers took steps to prevent him from leaving.

During that confrontation, at least one officer fired their service weapon, striking the man.

The man died at the scene.

The information in this update reflects what investigators know at this early stage, and what can be shared while maintaining the integrity of the investigations. Both investigations remain ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency. ASIRT investigates potential criminal offences involving police across Alberta, including cases where the actions of a police officer may have resulted in serious injury or death.
