Ranking Member Markey, Western Massachusetts Small Business Advocates Fight for Reopening of Springfield SBA Office

RM Markey: SBA must meet Bay Staters where they are, provide access to essential resources for small businesses, entrepreneurs in Western Massachusetts

(Boston, July 8) - Ranking Member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today renewed his call for the Small Business Administration (SBA) to provide resources to small businesses and entrepreneurs in Western Massachusetts by reopening the SBA branch office in Springfield, Massachusetts. Yesterday, small business advocates from Western Massachusetts, including the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council, regional lender Common Capital Inc., and eight additional regional chambers of commerce and economic leaders sent a letter to SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler to echo Ranking Member Markey's ongoing concerns, urging Trump's SBA to reopen the Springfield branch office and support Massachusetts small business owners and entrepreneurs in their communities.

"Small business owners and entrepreneurs across the Bay State deserve access to SBA resources to start, operate, and expand their businesses. While Trump's SBA is playing partisan political games with Main Street, small businesses are fighting month to month, week to week, and day to day to make ends meet in Trump's affordability nightmare," said Ranking Member Markey. "I applaud small business leaders and advocates in Massachusetts for standing up and fighting back to ensure that small businesses in Western Massachusetts, and across the Bay State, are not silenced by the Trump administration's harmful anti-small business agenda."

Ranking Member Markey is leading the fight to ensure small businesses and entrepreneurs in Massachusetts have access to resources through the SBA.

  • Last week, Ranking Member Markey sent a letter to Administrator Loeffler demanding that the SBA end its partisan attacks on Massachusetts small business owners and entrepreneurs, including through the SBA's closure of the Springfield branch office and the threat of removing the SBA District Office from Boston.
  • In March 2026, Ranking Member Markey led Senator Warren and Representatives Neal and McGovern in writing to GSA Administrator Edward Forst to demand answers regarding the continued closure of the SBA Springfield branch office.
  • In September 2025, Ranking Member Markey, Senator Warren, and Representatives Neal and McGovern wrote to SBA to renew their demands that the SBA reopen the Springfield branch office.
  • In May 2025, Ranking Member Markey, Senator Warren, and Representatives Neal and McGovern first wrote to Administrator Loeffler to slam the closure of the Springfield, Massachusetts SBA branch office.
  • In March 2025, Ranking Member Markey and Senator Warren sent a letter to GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian, asking what factors went into GSA's decision to cancel or not renew 17 leases in Massachusetts, including the Springfield branch office.
