The current government shutdown has put a halt to the military's tuition assistance program, but Campbell University Adult & Online Education is offering to cover up to one course for military students to avoid an interruption in their education.
Military students who are registered for at least one Fall II course can apply to have one three-credit AOE course guaranteed should the shutdown result in no tuition assistance this semester. Funding is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and is subject to a few requirements, which are outlined in the application. The form must be submitted by 9 a.m. on Friday (Oct. 10) of this week.
AOE Dean Nicole Winget, a U.S. Navy officer, said tuition support is a way for Campbell to further earn its status as one of the top 15 Military Friendly schools in the country.
"We talk a lot about serving our military population and being a 'Military Friendly' school, so it's awesome to see an institution step up like this for our students," Winget said. "I'm very proud of Campbell for doing this."
The federal government's shutdown - which went into effect on Oct. 1 - has put a halt on all non-essential services funded by the government and is forcing several hundred thousand federal employees and active-duty service members to work without pay. As a result, all requests for federal tuition assistance - including for military students - are on pause and cannot be paid or approved for courses starting after Oct. 1.
Campbell AOE's Fall II semester begins on Oct. 13 and ends on Dec. 7. Winget said Campbell's tuition assistance offer could benefit roughly 200 current military students enrolled in AOE.
Students wishing to learn more or apply for military tuition support for AOE classes can email Winget at [email protected].
