DURHAM, NC (October 19, 2026) - Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) introduced a resolution designating the third week of October as National Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week, to reaffirm the commitment to increasing awareness and funding for research and treatments for Hunter syndrome.
"As Hunter syndrome continues to affect thousands of people across the globe, it is critical that Congress reaffirms our commitment to researching treatments for this disease which still has no cure," said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04). "As modern medicine continues to develop, Congress has an opportunity to take steps towards advancing lifesaving treatment options for those suffering from this disease. I am proud to introduce this resolution recognizing National Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week to reaffirm our commitment to supporting those living with Hunter syndrome across the globe."
Hunter syndrome is a rare genetic disorder which prevents the body from properly breaking down sugar molecules, causing progressive, irreversible damage to organs and muscle tissue. This disease affects approximately 500 boys in the United States alone, and nearly 2,000 worldwide.
