Occupational Employment and Wages in Topeka — May 2025

Workers in the Topeka, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area had an average (mean) hourly wage of $29.62 in May 2025, compared to the nationwide average of $33.54, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Acting Regional Commissioner Jerome Watters noted that higher paying major occupational groups included management ($58.74), healthcare practitioners and technical ($48.13), and legal ($45.57). Lower paying occupations included food preparation and serving related ($15.75), personal care and service ($17.09), and building and grounds cleaning and maintenance ($18.21). (See table A.)

Occupational groups with the highest employment shares in the Topeka area included office and administrative support (12.6 percent), transportation and material moving (8.5 percent), and healthcare practitioners and technical (7.7 percent). Major occupational groups on the lower end of local employment included legal (1.0 percent); life, physical, and social science (1.1 percent); and arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media (1.1 percent).

One occupational group-healthcare practitioners and technical-was chosen to illustrate the diversity of data available for any of the 22 major occupational categories. Topeka had 8,870 jobs in healthcare practitioners and technical, accounting for 7.7 percent of local area employment, compared to the 6.3-percent share nationally. The average hourly wage for this occupational group locally was $48.13, compared to the national wage of $52.26.

Some of the larger detailed occupations within the healthcare practitioners and technical group included registered nurses (3,190), licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses (840), and nurse practitioners (500). Among the higher paying jobs in this group were general dentists ($87.17) and optometrists ($65.45). At the lower end of the wage scale were emergency medical technicians ($18.81) and dispensing opticians ($19.86). Location quotients allow us to explore the occupational make-up of a metropolitan area by comparing the composition of jobs in an area relative to the national average. (See table 1.) For example, a location quotient of 2.00 indicates that an occupation accounts for twice the share of employment in the area than it does nationally. In the Topeka area, above-average concentrations of employment were found in many of the occupations within the healthcare practitioners and technical group. For instance, recreational therapists specialists were employed at 7.31 times the national rate in Topeka, and nurse practitioners, at 2.07 times the U.S. average. Pharmacy technicians had a location quotient of 1.01 in Topeka, indicating that this particular occupation's local and national employment shares were similar.

The statistics in this release are from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, a cooperative effort between BLS and the State Workforce Agencies (SWAs).
