To highlight the City of Chula Vista's commitment to environmental protection, the city will host its annual South Bay Earth Day on Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chula Vista Bayfront Park. The free, family-friendly event invites the community to celebrate sustainability, connect with local organizations and learn practical ways to care for the environment.
South Bay Earth Day encourages simple, everyday actions that help reduce environmental impact. Attendees can explore interactive exhibits on green energy, water conservation and food waste composting while meeting local organizations and eco-friendly vendors working to advance sustainability in the region. The event will feature approximately 50 vendors and is powered entirely by battery energy, recognizing Clean, Renewable Energy provided by San Diego Community Power.
"South Bay Earth Day is more than a celebration-it's an opportunity for our community to come together and take meaningful action for a more sustainable future," said Manuel Medrano, environmental services manager for the City of Chula Vista. "By providing hands-on activities, practical resources we're empowering residents to make environmentally friendly choices that benefit our neighborhoods today and for generations to come."
One of the event's most popular attractions is the Fix-It Clinic, where residents can bring broken household items for repair. Skilled volunteers will help diagnose and fix items such as small electronics, clothing needing minor sewing repairs and small mechanical items, helping keep usable goods out of landfills. Participants are also encouraged to bring an old white T-shirt to take part in a tie-dye workshop that gives worn or plain shirts a colorful new life.
Event participants can also utilize the Recharge Zone powered by San Diego Community Power where patrons can enter, sit, recharge their phones, and sip some coffee from a nearby barista, while talking clean energy options.
Guests are encouraged to arrive in Earth Day style by riding their bikes and using the complimentary bike valet. With live and interactive entertainment, a variety of food options and activities for all ages, the event offers something for the entire community.
