Leader Schumer Slams Trump Admin Ripping Away Nearly $8 Billion For Energy Projects, Punishing American Families With Higher Costs And Fewer Jobs

New York, N.Y. - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement on the Department Of Energy vindictively terminating nearly $8 billion for over 200 energy projects in nearly exclusively blue states during the Trump Shutdown, which will harm American families by raising costs, delaying development, and ripping away jobs:

"This goes beyond targeting blue states. It's taking a wrecking ball to working families' lives: putting construction workers out of a job and raising families' electric bills for political gain.

"Donald Trump is threatening to hike energy costs and waste billions, wiping out projects already underway in his endless campaign for chaos & revenge and in the process axing thousands of American jobs. It is outrageous and counterproductive to pull the rug out from local projects, workers, & businesses that grow our local economies, spearhead American innovation, and lower costs.

"While Trump and his cronies claim this is "saving" billions of dollars, the value of these projects to communities, to local economies, and to workers stretches far beyond the initial federal investment. These cancelled projects represent tens, if not hundreds, of billions of dollars' worth of private investment, as well as future tax revenue, that our communities will now go without. Americans know that cancelling projects partway through ends up costing money, not saving it.

"Instead of playing politics with the shutdown, President Trump should be working on bipartisan solutions to lower Americans' costs and create jobs."
