WORKING VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA TO MALAYSIA
25-28 OCTOBER 2025
At the invitation of Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney will undertake a working visit to Malaysia from 25 to 28 October 2025, and participate at the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, as Guest of the Chair.
Leaders of ASEAN Member States, Timor Leste and external partners will convene in Kuala Lumpur to advance regional cooperation and discuss international issues, under Malaysia's Chairmanship theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability".
This marks Prime Minister Carney's first visit to Malaysia since taking office in March 2025. Prime Minister Carney will be accompanied by his spouse, Diana Fox Carney, as well as the Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development and senior government officials.
On 26 October 2025, Prime Minister Carney will attend the Opening Ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, and the Plenary Session of the 47th ASEAN Summit, where he is invited to deliver his remarks on "The Future Direction of ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Relations."
Prime Minister Carney is also scheduled to take part in a moderated discussion at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS), organised by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council of Malaysia, on the same day.
On 27 October 2025, the Prime Minister and Prime Minister Carney will hold a bilateral meeting where discussions are expected to focus on strengthening Malaysia-Canada relations, charting new directions for future collaboration, and exploring opportunities in trade and investment, Halal cooperation, energy cooperation, cybersecurity, and people-to-people connectivity. Later that evening, Prime Minister Carney and his spouse are invited to attend the Gala Dinner hosted by the Prime Minister and his spouse, Dato' Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Canada amounted to RM11.32 billion, marking an increase of 33.6 per cent from the previous year. This positive momentum continued into the first quarter of 2025, with total trade reaching RM3.26 billion, a 38.7 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2024. This visit is poised to build on this upward trajectory, expanding and diversifying economic cooperation between the two dynamic partners.
The visit reflects the long-standing and strategic partnership between Malaysia and Canada, underpinned by mutual respect, shared prosperity, and a common vision for a stable, rules-based, and sustainable international order.
