UNF Homecoming 2025: A soaring celebration of Osprey spirit

The University of North Florida's Homecoming 2025 celebration was a legendary tribute to the spirit of the Osprey and included the dramatic return of UNF's beloved mascot, Ozzie the Osprey.

Ozzie, who had been missing since Halloween, made a grand reappearance during the Homecoming basketball game, bursting through a blaze of pyrotechnics to thunderous cheers from students, alumni and friends.

A fiercer, bolder Ozzie didn't just return, he evolved. Sporting the iconic lightning bolt eye shape, sharper beak and a leaner, muscular, more athletic frame, the new Ozzie caricature was designed by UNF alum Will Pease ('20) to look both aggressive and playful, with a vintage collegiate mascot feel.

Since becoming UNF's official mascot in 1979 and earning his name through a campus wide vote in 1988, Ozzie has undergone several transformations. But this latest version marks a new era, one that reflects the university's growth and fierce ambition.

The new Ozzie, which aligns more closely with the Athletics logo, embodies the fearless energy of the Osprey and symbolizes the competitive strength of the North Florida Ospreys NCAA Division 1 programs. Ozzie proudly represents UNF's 19 varsity teams and student-athletes who regularly earn high academic achievements, conference honors and national recognition.

"Ozzie the Osprey has always been a fan favorite, bringing energy and excitement to UNF and the Jacksonville community," said Nick Morrow, UNF Athletics director. "His refreshed look reflects our relentless pursuit of excellence and the competitive spirit that defines UNF Athletics. With this new chapter, Ozzie will continue to inspire pride and loyalty while showcasing the strength, speed and focus that drive student success, both in the classroom and on the field."

Homecoming 2025 was moved to the fall for the first time this year and also marked the triumphant return of the parade, believed to be the first in more than a decade. The streets came alive with the rhythm of drums from the Edward White High School marching band, cheering crowds and decorated vehicles from more than 50 community groups including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacksonville Sharks, JFRD and JEA, all to celebrate UNF's impact on Northeast Florida.

The Homecoming Tailgate buzzed with energy as fans rallied before the men's basketball showdown against New College of Florida, which capped off the week with high-octane action and a big win for the Ospreys, with a final score of 122 for UNF and 67 for NCF.

Beloved traditions made their return, including the crowd-pleasing Battle of the Bands, the prestigious Alumni Recognition Awards and the sizzling Sculpture Iron Pour. This year also introduced new events like the Ospreys Serve volunteer initiative that united students and alumni in giving back and the Reunion Milestone Mixer that toasted graduates from years ending in "5," reconnecting generations of Ospreys.

Homecoming 2025 wasn't just an epic party, it was a powerful reminder of how far UNF has come. Ozzie is back and bolder. School spirit is stronger. And the UNF Ospreys are taking flight. Watch Ozzie's grand reappearance.
