Tampa Electric customers could see another reduction in what they pay for electricity beginning in January, as lower natural gas prices create an opportunity for additional savings.

Today, Tampa Electric asked the Florida Public Service Commission to approve a 1.5% reduction in residential customer bills beginning in January 2027. If approved, a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month would pay $154.13.

The proposed reduction would come just months after Tampa Electric's storm recovery charge ended in August, reducing a typical residential bill by about 11% to 12%. While high summer temperatures can drive higher electricity use and total bills, customers are paying less than they otherwise would have without the storm charge, and Tampa Electric is now seeking to lower bills again.

"With the storm recovery charge now behind us and fuel costs coming down, we have another opportunity to deliver savings for our customers," said Archie Collins, president and chief executive officer of Tampa Electric. "Our residential rates are already well below the national average, and we'll continue looking for every opportunity to manage costs and keep bills as low as possible."

Why Is Tampa Electric Asking to Lower Customer Bills?

Natural gas is the primary fuel used to generate electricity, and its cost is passed directly to customers with no markup or profit to the company. Fuel accounts for about 20% of residential customers' bills.

As natural gas prices are lower than anticipated, and they are expected to remain low in coming months, TECO is requesting those savings be reflected in customer bills.

Tampa Electric continuously works to lower fuel costs for customers. The company invests in making its power plants more efficient, producing more electricity with less fuel, while strategically managing fuel purchases and using the lowest-cost sources of power available. These efforts can deliver meaningful savings for customers over time.

When Would Tampa Electric's Lower Rates Take Effect?

The Florida Public Service Commission is expected to consider the request on Nov. 3.

How Much Would Tampa Electric Customers Pay?

If approved, customers would see the reduction take effect in January, continuing a trend of lower bills and reinforcing Tampa Electric's efforts to deliver reliable energy at the lowest possible price. A residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours in a month would pay $154.13, which is a 1.5% reduction on top of the 11% to 12% reduction that occurred in August. Commercial and industrial customers would see a reduction of 1% to 6%, depending on usage.
