DOUGLASSVILLE - Strategies to improve reading performance in schools will be reviewed during a public hearing of the Senate Majority Policy Committee hosted by Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) and chaired by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) next week. The hearing will focus on structured literacy, a science-based approach to reading instruction codified into law through Act 135 of 2024.
The hearing will be held Monday, Jan. 12, from 2-4 p.m. at Daniel Boone Middle School, 1845 Weavertown Rd., Douglassville and will feature testimony from educators and reading specialists.
"As we have seen in other states, supplemental reading programs are proven, effective methods of helping kids truly learn to read," Pennycuick said. "I'm pleased we were successful in providing additional resources to help kids and schools get back to basics and make learning to read a priority."
"It doesn't matter what career path our young people take in life - without being able to read, they won't be able to function," Argall said. "We're seeing high rates of illiteracy across Pennsylvania and the nation. What we need is to review the basics, implement what works and give our students the tools they need to compete and succeed."
The hearing will be livestreamed on the committee's website.
