Southwest Virginia landowners share input on proposed transmission project

ROANOKE, Va., Dec. 31, 2025 - Appalachian Power?Company (APCo)?representatives?joined up?with landowners at?recent?open houses?in Radford and Floyd, Va.,?for the Claytor-Floyd Transmission Line Rebuild Project.?The two-day events?brought together?more than 65?landowners?for?their input?on?proposed routes?to rebuild?approximately 18 miles of 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission?line?in?Floyd, Montgomery and Pulaski counties.??

"These open houses play an important role in determining a proposed route,"?said Rory Chisholm,?APCo project manager who is overseeing the Claytor - Floyd Project.?"Property owner feedback is for planning the final route and building community goodwill." ?

If approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), the?project?would?replace?1940s-era?infrastructure?with modern equipment to increase electric reliability and reduce the need for frequent maintenance.?The?upgrades would?strengthen the local transmission system to meet future power demand and growth in?southwest Virginia.??

Community involvement is vital in helping the project team rebuild the transmission line in a way that minimizes the impacts on homes,?businesses?and the environment.?APCo representatives?welcome and?encourage landowners to?submit?comment?cards?at the open house and provide feedback?on proposed route options.?Alternatively,?customers may?also?submit?input?using the?online?comment card?located?on?the Claytor - Floyd Transmission Line Rebuild Project website?or?by?calling 833-236-7697?with?details?on?how this project affects specific property or special conditions related to their property.?The?project?team will?collect and?review all feedback?and work with landowners to?identify?next?steps to?select?a proposed route?by spring 2026.??

The project team plans to?file?the?application with?the SCC?in summer?2026. If approved, construction is expected to?begin?in?fall 2029?and conclude by the end of 2032.???
