Council Road Safety Officer Steven Bloomfield is urging all motorists across New South Wales to embrace a simple but powerful message: be kind and considerate on the road.
With regional areas continuing to experience a high number of serious incidents, Bloomfield emphasised that every driver plays a role in keeping others safe. "Road safety isn't just about rules and enforcement-it's about respect," he said. "The way we treat each other behind the wheel has real consequences."
He highlighted the importance of protecting those who work and respond on our roads every day, including road workers, emergency personnel, and first responders. "These people are often working in high-risk environments to keep the community safe. Slowing down, staying alert, and giving them space isn't optional-it's essential."
Transport for NSW continues to reinforce these messages across the state, particularly in regional communities where long distances, fatigue, and higher speed limits can increase risks. Bloomfield noted that small actions-like patience in roadwork zones or pulling over safely for emergency vehicles-can save lives.
This focus on empathy and shared responsibility aligns with the theme of National Road Safety Week 2026, which calls on all Australians to prioritise kindness and care on the roads.
"Every trip matters," Bloomfield said. "If we all commit to being more considerate, we can help ensure everyone gets home safely."
