Earlier this summer, the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project achieved some of its last major milestones with the opening of the new I-20 westbound connecting lane and I-20 westbound flyover ramp to I-285 southbound. The new lanes and ramp provide a safer, smoother transition between the two interstates and remove last-minute merging and weaving from the general purpose lanes.

Now that the old loop ramp is gone and traffic is moving smoothly through the new interchange, what work remains to be completed before Georgia DOT construction crews clear the roadway?

What's Next to Completion?

Coming up, motorists will see crews repaving and restriping I-285 and I-20 throughout the project limits to give the roads a much-needed refresh. Crews will also install advance pavement markings-complete with interstate shields-to clearly inform drivers on the updated connections and upcoming lane destinations.

Refreshed striping on the roadway will put traffic in the final lane configurations and replace the temporary traffic striping needed during the construction phases for bridge widenings and the addition of the auxiliary lanes.

Throughout the project limits, crews are replacing, repairing, and installing noise barriers along I-20 and I-285.

With that, the path to anticipated substantial completion is a short one. The project is expected to reach this milestone in September 2026. Minor remaining punch-list work throughout the corridor will continue until final acceptance and closeout are completed in Q1 2027.

As construction continues across the I-285/I-20 East Interchange, safety remains the top priority for motorists and construction crews.

Following this summer's opening of the new bridge and connecting lane, Georgia DOT reminds motorists that, while updates are coordinated with navigation services ahead of time, there may be potential delays in the updating of GPS services.
