The Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure Announces the Appointment of its Newest Commission Member, Juanita F. Ferguson, Esq.

The District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure (CJDT) announces the appointment of its newest Commission member.

On February 11, 2020, 2026, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser formally appointed Juanita F. Ferguson as one of her two appointees on the Commission, replacing William P. Lightfoot who served for 25 years. Commissioner Ferguson's appointment was effective upon her swearing in, March 11, 2026, 2026 and she will serve a six-year term. The Commission is eager to work with Commissioner Ferguson, a seasoned and award-winning litigator and shareholder at Bean, Kinney & Korman, where her practice is focused on real estate and construction matters, representing developers, homeowners, engineers, contractors, building materials manufacturers, subcontractors, and suppliers. As an experienced and practicing litigator, Commissioner Ferguson brings to the Commission firsthand knowledge of the DC courts. Regarding her Commission appointment, Commissioner Ferguson said, "It is a privilege to be appointed to the Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure. I am committed to carrying out the Commission's responsibilities with fairness, independence, and respect for the rule of law, and I appreciate the confidence placed in me to serve the District of Columbia."

Commissioner Ferguson earned her B.B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the George Washington University Law School, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board, Trial Court Board, and D.C. Law Students in Court. After law school, Commissioner Ferguson clerked for the Honorable Anita Josey-Herring and the Honorable Herbert B. Dixon, Jr. of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She previously served as an Adjunct Professor at Washington College of Law at American University, where she taught Legal Research Methods and Writing Techniques. She is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia State Bars and has held leadership positions in numerous volunteer Bar associations. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., having served most recently as co-chair of the Connection and Social Action Committee for Xi Omega Chapter.

Chairperson Amy Bess and her fellow Commissioners look forward to working with Commissioner Ferguson on the Commission's mission and are profoundly appreciative of former Commissioner Lightfoot's decades of service to the Commission. Chairperson Bess stated, "While we knew Bill Lightfoot's shoes on the Commission would be difficult to fill, we are grateful to Mayor Bowser for appointing such an outstanding Commissioner to replace him. Commissioner Ferguson brings to us years of deep experience with the DC courts. Her wealth of wisdom and legal acumen will undoubtedly enhance the Commission's deliberations and decision-making."
