VICTOR - Today marks the beginning of enforcement for the Wyoming Transportation Department's 'WY22 Safe Pass' program, requiring that all vehicles over 10,000 gross vehicle weight (about the size of a large pickup truck) must be pre-certified before driving Teton Pass beyond the Idaho and Wyoming border.
The Idaho Transportation Department is supporting the WY22 Safe Pass program by installing signs along State Highway 33 and at vehicle turnouts on the border in advance of Teton Pass. Various helpful materials and links are being disseminated across east Idaho at ports of entry and junctions where drivers would detour onto Idaho roadways if opting not to complete WYDOT's pre-certification.
"We always want to be a willing and helpful partner," ITD District Engineer Jason Minzghor said. "Advanced warning in Idaho is necessary and we're happy to help where we can. A lot of Idahoans drive Teton Pass regularly and we want to make sure they're aware of the new requirement too."
More information, including details regarding fines and citations, and the pre-certification process itself can be found by clicking to WYDOT's SAFE PASS webpage. The online pre-certification includes materials and videos about navigating steep grades, current legal restrictions, braking protocols, weight and load limitations and vehicle operation. Additional information and news can also be found at WYDOT's webpage.
