Marketing senior named November First-Gen Student of the Month

Lamar University has named Diana Resendez, a senior marketing major from Port Arthur, Texas, as the First-Generation Student of the Month for November.

Resendez, the first in her family to attend college, said the journey hasn't been easy but has made her more determined than ever to succeed.

"Being first gen in my family comes with a lot of ups and downs but mostly downs," she said. "That doesn't mean that I must stop doing what I'm doing for my future. This means that I must work ten times harder for my health, my wealth, my mind, and my grind. I'm so proud of myself for the things that I have accomplished throughout my time here at LU and I'm proud of y'all for doing what's best for your heart. Keep pushing, stay focused but remember to take care of yourself first. ¡Todo vale la pena!"

Each month, Lamar University's Office of Strategic Initiatives and the Strategic Initiative Advisory Committee recognize one student who exemplifies the perseverance and spirit of first-generation Cardinals. The initiative is part of First-Generation Connections, which strives to engage, empower and encourage first-generation students to succeed at LU by providing resources and support to help them persist through graduation.

More than 50% of Lamar University students identify as first-generation college students.

To nominate a student for future recognition, visit the First-Gen Student of the Month nomination form on the Office of Strategic Initiatives website: https://www.lamar.edu/forms/strategic-initiatives/first-gen-student-nomination.html.
