From exploring career possibilities to developing professional skills and building meaningful connections, Wayne State University is helping students prepare for success beyond the classroom. In celebration of National Career Development Week, recognized Nov. 16-20, the university is inviting students to participate in career development activitiesand bringing together faculty, staff, alumni and industry professionals to share their experiences, insights and advice.
Throughout the week, Career Services will host a series of interactive sessions, career readiness presentations, professional networking opportunities and other activities designed to help students identify their strengths and interests, explore potential career paths, enhance their professional presence, and develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate today's evolving workforce.
Career Services, housed within the Division of Academic Affairs' Office of Partnerships and Workforce, will also launch its "Career Advice from Our University Community" initiative as part of the celebration to connect students with a wealth of knowledge and experience from Wayne State's professional community.
Faculty, staff and alumni are invited to share career advice through an online submission form; industry professionals and partners will be encouraged to contribute via LinkedIn. Students can also explore perspectives through a Career Advice Board displayed in the Student Success HUB.
"Career development is a journey that begins on day one, and our entire university community has a role to play in helping students navigate it," said Christine Jackson, vice provost for partnerships and workforce. "Our faculty, staff, alumni and industry partners bring a wealth of experiences and perspectives that can help students explore possibilities, make connections and prepare for their futures. National Career Development Week is an opportunity to bring those voices together and remind students that they have a community invested in their success."
The celebration reflects Wayne State's ongoing commitment to making career-engaged learning part of every student's experience, from their first year through graduation. This commitment is at the heart of the university's College to Career initiative, which connects classroom learning with real-world experiences and helps students prepare for their professional futures.
Beyond National Career Development Week, Wayne State's Office of Career Services offers personalized career planning; internships and experiential learning resources; employer connections; and assistance with resumes, interviews, and job searches. Students also have access to tools such as Handshake to explore job and internship opportunities, Big Interview to practice interviewing, and Steppingblocks to research potential career paths. Additional resources include the College to Career maps, which help students identify opportunities and experiences relevant to their academic and professional goals, and the Career Ready path in Get Involved.
