Alessio Fratarcangeli '25, Gage Outlaw '24 and Benjamin Woodard are the 2025 recipients of the Brody Scholar award, East Carolina University's most prestigious medical scholarship to attend the Brody School of Medicine.
The scholarship, valued at approximately $118,000 per student, provides each scholar four years of medical school tuition, living expenses and the opportunity to design a summer enrichment program that can include travel abroad. The award also supports community service projects the students may undertake while in medical school.
The Brody Scholars program was created through gifts from the Brody family and the Brody Foundation. Since the program began in 1983, 163 medical students have received the award.
Michael Waldrum, dean of the Brody School of Medicine, CEO of ECU Health and president of the Brody Foundation, said the Brody family's creation and support of the Brody Scholars program is building an incredible legacy in eastern North Carolina. More than 70% of Brody Scholars remain in North Carolina to practice, and the majority of those stay in eastern North Carolina.
The three new Brody Scholars and their Class of 2029 peers started their first year of medical studies in early August.
Fratarcangeli, the son of Vita and Ruggero Fratarcangeli of Wake Forest, earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from ECU's Thomas Harriott College of Arts and Sciences. He plans to become a pediatrician. Fratarcangeli was honored as a 2025 recipient of the Robert H. Wright Leadership Award by the ECU Alumni Association. The award is one of the most prestigious given to undergraduate seniors at the university.
He said he is grateful to the Brody Foundation for choosing him as a Brody Scholar.
"Being selected as a Brody Scholar is an honor that I cannot put into words," Fratarcangeli said. "Representing Brody through service, leadership and improving the health of this region is something I will forever be thankful for."

Outlaw, the son of Bill and Candace Outlaw of Faison, earned a Bachelor of Science in biology with a molecular/cell biology concentration at ECU. He aims to work in hematology/oncology or family medicine after medical school.
Outlaw described his selection as a Brody Scholar as an incredible blessing. He is grateful to the Brody Foundation for recognizing his passion for his community.
"There is a tremendous need for physicians in Duplin County, and it has always been my dream to treat the people who raised me and shaped me into who I am today," Outlaw said. "Years of trials and prayers have led me to this moment, and I thank God every day for the privilege of being a Brody Scholar at the Brody School of Medicine. I am eager to join this prestigious program, knowing it will shape me into the physician they need me to be."
Woodard, the son of Michael and Tara Woodard of Lucama, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a degree in public health and a pre-clinical concentration. He hopes to combine his service as a physician in emergency medicine and internal medicine.
Woodard said he is honored to be selected as a Brody Scholar and sees the award as a profound responsibility. He said the support, resources and mentorship the Brody Scholar program provides has given him the confidence to face the challenges of medical school.
"To me, being a Brody Scholar is a commitment to not only academic excellence, but to leadership, and most importantly, service to my community," Woodard said. "I am deeply grateful to be given this incredible opportunity and strive each day to honor the legacy of both the Brody family and the Brody Scholars who have come before me."
