Celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month with the Bucket List Challenge

DES MOINES, IOWA - Wednesday, July 1, 2026 - Discover Des Moines through this months' Parks and Recreation Bucket List Challenge!

This photo submission contest encourages residents of all ages to get out and explore Des Moines parks and programs during National Parks and Recreation month this July. All you have to do is grab your crew and visit locations on the 2026 bucket list, snap a photo, and upload your masterpiece!

With 10 locations on this year's list, there is plenty to explore. The more items you check off your list, the higher your chance of winning the grand prize: a Scheels Outdoor Yard Game Package.

Bucket List locations include newly improved neighborhood parks, regional attractions, hidden gems, and maybe even your new favorite park!

"Parks and recreation brings us together, strengthens our health and well-being, and builds more resilient, connected communities," Assistant Director of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Jenny Richmond said.

"The power of these connections thrives throughout our programs, events, play spaces, community hubs, aquatic facilities, nature spaces, volunteer opportunities, and so much more. We can't wait for you to explore it all and discover something new in our community this summer!"

Des Moines Parks and Recreation encourages all residents, from avid adventurers to casual park-goers, to take part in the Bucket List Challenge. It's a fantastic way to celebrate July's National Park and Recreation Month, create lasting memories, and see the power of parks and recreation in action!
