Walberg Honors Calhoun County Veteran

Today, the office of Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) recognized Samuel "Sam" Dougherty of East Leroy as the Veteran of the Month for August at the Calhoun County Fair. The Congressman's office presented Sam with the Congressional Record containing his remarks honoring Sam's service and dedication to our country.

Sam Dougherty served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Combat Engineer from 1988 to 1994.

Following his service, Sam worked as the Director of Southwest Michigan Operations for the Michigan Workforce Development Institute, where he helped job seekers, including veterans, find employment opportunities. Since 2023, Sam has served as the Michigan State Representative for Helmets to Hardhats, a national nonprofit organization that connects military service members, veterans, and reservists with quality careers in the building trades.

Sam also served as a volunteer for a freedom hunt for disabled veterans at Fort Custer for 20 years and currently volunteers with the Michigan Wounded and Returning Warrior Program, offering steadfast support to those who have borne the heaviest burdens of war. For his volunteer work with veterans, he has been awarded the Marine Corps League Distinguished Citizen Award.

"I am honored to recognize Sam Dougherty whose continued service and dedication to serving others represents the best of our armed forces," said Rep. Walberg. "From his time serving as a Combat Engineer with the Marine Corps Reserve to his role helping fellow veterans find reliable employment and care, Sam's commitment to his country and local community has never wavered. I commend him for his service, which serves as an inspiration to us all."
