Do More and Be More Beyond Boundaries: ReMA Gulf Coast Region’s 2026 Summer Convention Highlights How the Industry Exceeds Expectations

More than 700 recycled materials industry professionals gathered in New Orleans for the ReMA Gulf Coast Region's 2026 Summer Convention. From the more than 90 exhibitors to engaging keynote speakers James Carville and Mary Matalin, and a thought-provoking panel on consumer expansion, attendees gained tools to take their businesses to the next level.

On Thursday, June 18 welcome remarks were given by Zach Shemper, ReMA Gulf Coast Region Convention Chair and featured special guest Lt. Governor of Louisiana William H. Nungesser. The Lt. Governor also received a first-hand look at the industry by touring the exhibit hall and learning more about the latest in industry developments.

ReMA Gulf Coast Region President Alton Schaubhut also provided opening remarks, demonstrating industry and regional pride, and celebrating the work of the industry and ReMA.

After opening remarks, Gary Champlin, General Manager & CEO of Champlin Tire Recycling Inc., was recognized with the 2026 Israel Proler Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership, achievements, and lasting contributions to the recycled materials industry.

Champlin's leadership was especially critical during one of the most challenging periods in the history of ReMA. As Chair of the Board of Directors during the COVID pandemic, he helped guide the association through tremendous uncertainty ensuring that ReMA not only weathered the storm but also emerged stronger on the other side.

"His tenure also saw important progress in expanding ReMA's regional model and laying the groundwork for the successful rebrand that has helped position our industry for the future," said ReMA President Robin Wiener who attended the Gulf Coast event. "Gary has devoted countless hours to advancing both ReMA and the broader recycled materials industry."

The keynote address titled "Beyond All Boundaries" featured political and policy experts and husband-and-wife duo James Carville and Mary Matalin. The event was moderated by Wiener along with Schaubhut. It was a dynamic and insightful conversation on the state of politics amid a rapidly shifting national and international landscape.

Beyond all boundaries is more than a saying; it's an embodiment of looking past expectations to do more and be more. Something the recycled materials industry is known for.

"What stood out most was the thoughtful discussion around the forces shaping today's political environment and the implications for businesses, communities, and industries navigating an increasingly complex world," Wiener said. "I found the discussion particularly timely as we all try to navigate increasing political, economic, and geopolitical uncertainty."

As the recycled materials industry depends on global manufacturing, resilient supply chains, and market access, understanding the broader political landscape has never been more important.
