Exploring Alaska Native Cultural Legacy on ‘Our Way of Life’ Debuting September 29 on Outdoor Channel

MeatEater Creator, Heather Douville, Uplifts TlingitTraditions

DENVER (September 17, 2025) - From the studios of MeatEater, Outdoor Channel is proud to announce the premiere of Our Way of Life, a groundbreaking new series debuting on September 29 at 8 p.m. ET. Hosted by Tlingit Nation member Heather Douville, the series offers an intimate look into the cultural, hunting, and culinary practices of the Tlingit people, celebrating their deep connection to the land, sea, and community.

Heather Douville, known by her traditional name Kootink, belongs to the Shank'weidi clan (Eagle/Wolf) and is a content creator at MeatEater. Through Our Way of Life, Douville shares her tribe's traditions, values, and knowledge, passed down for over 10,000 years through storytelling and practice. The series is a heartfelt journey of reconnection, resilience, and stewardship, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the Tlingit way of life.

"Our Way of Life is a celebration and representation of who we are as stewards of the land," said Douville. "It's about respecting what we take, giving back, and sharing with our community. I hope this series inspires people to connect with their food, their culture, and their roots, no matter where they are in their journey."

The series follows Douville and her father, Michael, as they document seasonal practices, from harvesting herring eggs in the spring to crafting traditional náxw (halibut hooks) and sewing sea otter fur garments. Each episode highlights the Tlingit Nation's deep respect for the land and its resources, emphasizing the importance of using what is taken and sharing with others.

Douville's journey to reconnect with her culture began as a young adult when she returned to her ancestral home in Southeast Alaska. Taught by her father and elders, she embraced the practices of hunting, harvesting, and stewardship with reverence and respect. Her vulnerability in sharing this journey on her Instagram page (@akmoosie) has resonated with audiences worldwide, inspiring others to explore their own heritage and connection to the natural world.

"My dad taught me how to hunt from a skiff later in life, and it was transformative. He wanted me to finish my education in the lower 48, while I wanted my education to come from him," she shared. "It's never too late to learn, unlearn, and grow. My hope is that this series empowers youth, women, and people of all ages to embrace their culture and share."

The series also addresses the challenges of preserving Indigenous traditions in today's world, from navigating modern regulations to combating the erosion of cultural knowledge at the hands of colonization. Douville's work is a testament to the resilience of the Tlingit people and their unwavering commitment to passing down their heritage to future generations.

"Kids are sacred in our culture," Douville explained. "I want my nieces, nephews, and all youth to know they are valued and have a purpose. By practicing our culture-using all parts of the fish, respecting the land, and sharing with others-we teach them the values that define who we are."

Our Way of Life is a production from MeatEater, where Heather works as a content creator, offering a unique opportunity to amplify Indigenous voices and share the Tlingit Nation's story with a broader audience.
