WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) requested that the U.S. House of Representatives' Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) withhold his salary for the duration of the government shutdown, which began at 12:01am ET on October 1st, 2025. Courtney has withheld his pay during every government shutdown since he was elected to serve as a Member of Congress.
"Connecticut's Second District is home to more federal employees than any other Congressional District in our state, including nearly 8,000 Navy sailors and officers at SUBASE New London. If our hardworking servicemembers and federal employees don't get paid during this unnecessary government shutdown, neither will I," Courtney said. "The clear middle ground to end this shutdown is with a truly clean bill that funds the government and prevents a health care cost hike by maintaining longstanding Affordable Care Act tax credits. Refusal to even come to the negotiating table for a bipartisan compromise is an insult to the federal workers and servicemembers who show up for work when called on."
