Congresswoman Ramirez Condemns Trump’s Unlawful Military Action on Iran, Murder of Head of State

Chicago, IL-Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:

"Many of us were clear that the violence and destabilization that Trump started in Venezuela was not going to end there. Fascists and despots start wars to remain in power and enrich themselves. Today, in the Middle East, we are seeing what two unaccountable warmongers will do with unchecked power and a lack of oversight.

Once again, the Trump Administration, this time in coordination with Netanyahu's government, perpetrated an unlawful attack against a sovereign nation and its head of state. As it was with the kidnapping of Maduro, the murder of Ali Khamenei is an unlawful action. It is a violation of U.S. and international law and dangerously undermines the rule of law, making all of us less safe. Trump's actions only bring us closer to a regional war that puts civilians and American troops at risk.

I stand with all people who yearn to be free, including Iranian protestors who have bravely demanded change. It is the action of the people that secures lasting change and enduring peace. History has shown us that peace and democracy have never been realized through strong men, United States imperialism, or unilateral military intervention. Regime change has always been the powerful's preferred pretense for advancing U.S. economic and corporate interests around the world.

Americans are tired of endless wars. Congress can't keep turning a blind eye. We can't continue allowing a despot to consolidate power at home and abroad and put our democracy and security at risk. We have to take action. Our constituents are calling us to hold Donald Trump and every fascist, warmonger, and despot accountable. Let's pass my Block the Bombs Act, pass a War Powers Resolution that asserts our authorities, and impeach Trump."
