Assateague Island National Seashore to Begin $2.5 Million Water Line Project to Improve Visitor Experience

BERLIN, Md. - Assateague Island National Seashore today announced it will begin a $2.5 million water line replacement project in mid-October to upgrade essential water infrastructure in developed areas of the park's Maryland Unit. The project will improve water pressure and reliability for visitors and park operations while supporting current needs and future facility improvements.
The existing water system, designed in the 1990s, no longer meets the demands of current visitor levels. The project will enhance water pressure throughout the system, supporting both current needs and future facility improvements.
Funded by Assateague Island recreation fee revenue, the project will reinvest visitor fees directly into essential park infrastructure and improve the visitor experience. Construction will primarily use boring horizontal techniques to minimize ground disturbance and visitor impact. No road closures are expected; however, campground loops will close on a rolling basis beginning in early November. The campground will remain open at reduced capacity during construction.
This project is part of the park's ongoing commitment to reinvesting fee revenue in infrastructure, improving the visitor experience, and extending the lifespan of essential systems. For updates and additional information, please visit www.nps.gov/asis
