LOS ANGELES - Today, Mayor Bass continued her Shine LA movement that has helped foster a sense of pride and community throughout Los Angeles as the city prepares to step onto the world stage for upcoming major global events. Shine LA brought volunteers together in North Hollywood, North Hills, Central LA, South LA, East LA and the Harbor Area. B-roll of the events will be available here.
"Shine LA invites Angelenos to come together in service of their community and I am proud that so many answered that call today," said Mayor Karen Bass. "Angelenos are proud of their City and today's event continues our commitment to prepare the City to host major global events. Together, we will stand united and continue this momentum until every neighborhood can shine on the world stage."
"Events like this do more than clean up one place on one day," said L.A. City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, whose district surrounds North Hollywood Park. "Giving service provides people with a sense of purpose. Every time neighbors meet to take care of their common spaces, it fosters relationships and builds community. A well cared for public space attracts more families for healthy outdoor activity and creates a safer, healthier environment for everyone."
"Today's Meatball Mayhem is a perfect example of how Los Angeles shines when we come together," said L.A. City Councilmember John Lee, whose district includes Hope the Mission. "By serving meals with compassion and dignity, we're reminding our unhoused neighbors that they matter and that this city will not give up on them."
"Shine LA brought out the spirit and pride of Boyle Heights, where city partners, community groups, and neighbors come together in service of our neighborhoods," said L.A. Councilmember Ysabel Jurado. "By working side by side, we build stronger, more connected communities and carry that energy forward so every neighborhood can thrive."
Mayor Bass kicked off Shine LA at North Hollywood Park where she recognized the Tom LaBonge Day of Service and Community Climate Action Day. Joined by Councilmember Adrin Nazarian, Assemblymember Nick Schultz, California Chief Service Officer and GO-Serve Director Josh Fryday and members of the LaBonge family, Mayor Bass gave away free planting trees with volunteers participating in community cleaning efforts.
Continuing the day of service, Mayor Bass joined Hope the Mission for their Meatball Mayhem alongside Councilmember John Lee, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk and Hope the Mission President Rowan Vansleve. Mayor Bass joined volunteers in making thousands of meatballs for Angelenos experiencing homelessness. Volunteers from UCLA Volunteer Day joined the effort, helping connect Bruins to their local communities, amplifying the impact of Hope the Mission's efforts.
Shine LA has brought together thousands of volunteers across all 15 council districts, unifying Angelenos around the common cause of preparing Los Angeles to welcome the world, ensuring that the City is showing its best in the coming years.
Mayor Bass will continue to host community gatherings like Shine LA to bring Angelenos together ahead of the City stepping on the world stage for upcoming major global events. Angelenos can go to mayor.lacity.gov/ShineLAto sign-up for notifications when Shine LA comes to their neighborhood.
