College of Fine Arts Dean Paul Steger and School of Communications Journalism Professor Trish Muyco-Tobin represented Webster University this week when the City of Webster Groves formally adopted "City of the Arts" as its official municipal epithet.
The Webster Groves City Council on Oct. 6 unanimously passed Resolution #2026-99, recognizing the role that arts, culture and creativity play in the identity and vitality of the community.
Steger, who spoke before the council, noted that the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts produces approximately 150 arts-related events each year.
"Plus, we partner with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. We host The Muny Summer Intensive, a three-week immersive training and performance program. And the Community Music School of Webster University offers outstanding music education and performance opportunities to students," Steger said.
Muyco-Tobin is a member of the Webster Groves Arts Commission, which led the years-long effort to officially designate Webster as the "City of the Arts."
"More than a slogan, it's a testament to the breadth of what we have, from the visual arts to the performing arts to the Conservatory of the Arts at Webster University," Muyco-Tobin said. "It's also in recognition of the artists and creatives who thrive here, and the community that supports them."
"The designation builds upon a reputation that Webster Groves has cultivated for years," said Dottie Marshall Englis, award-winning costume designer, educator, a professor emerita of Design at the Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts, and a member of the City's Arts Commission. "No other local city comes close to our history, breadth, depth, and excellence in the arts."
By formally adopting "City of the Arts," the city is authorizing the use of the slogan for official communications, marketing and promotional efforts with a gradual rollout over the next year.
