HARRISBURG - Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-Schuylkill) issued the following statement in response to a local fire company being cited by the state for accepting credit card payments through an online fundraiser:

"Pennsylvania's volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line for our communities, and they should not be penalized for using modern tools to raise money to keep their firehouses operating.

"A local fire company was recently cited by the state for accepting credit card payments through an online fundraiser. This is exactly the kind of unnecessary obstacle that we need to remove.

"Last March, I co-sponsored House Bill 962 to help Pennsylvania's volunteer fire companies conduct legitimate fundraising and better serve their communities. Unfortunately, the legislation has not been considered by the House Gaming Oversight Committee.

"Our volunteer fire companies are struggling to recruit members and raise the funds necessary to maintain equipment, facilities and emergency response capabilities. We should be making it easier, not harder, for them to succeed.

"Pennsylvania needs to stand with its volunteer heroes. I will continue working to advance House Bill 962 and other common-sense measures that give our fire companies the tools they need to protect our communities."
