WASHINGTON - On Friday, May 22, 2026, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Co-Chair of the Senate Arctic Caucus, will lead a bipartisan, all-woman congressional delegation to Canada, Greenland, Norway and Iceland to examine U.S. and allied Arctic security, infrastructure and research capabilities amid growing geopolitical competition in the region from Russia and China. The delegation will engage with U.S. military personnel, Indigenous communities, allied officials, Arctic researchers and regional leaders on emerging operational and strategic dynamics across the High North.
Alongside Shaheen and Murkowski, the delegation includes U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Katie Britt (R-AL) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).
During the trip, the Senators will visit Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, receive briefings on Arctic defense and strategic competition, meet with Canadian and Icelandic officials and examine critical infrastructure, including deepwater ports, satellite facilities and Arctic research stations. The delegation will also engage with Inuit leaders and Arctic experts on the impacts of climate change and regional security challenges.
