Art Cavazos Retiring from TASA Executive Superintendent Team

Art Cavazos is retiring from his work as a TASA Executive Superintendent as of September 1, 2026, to pursue his next career - being a grandfather.

Cavazos has been part of TASA since the 1990s, when he joined the organization while working as an assistant superintendent in Mission CISD. Over the years he has served on numerous TASA committees, on the TASA 2025 Task Force, and as a mentor to new superintendents.

In 2021, after retiring from Harlingen CISD, where he had served as superintendent for eight years, Cavazos joined TASA as part of the Executive Superintendent program, which is a team of highly regarded former superintendents who serve part-time as an extension of TASA staff and support TASA members in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on helping new superintendents navigate the role.

For the past five years, Cavazos has lent his experience and expertise to those who need it as the TASA Executive Superintendent for Regions 1 and 20.

'One of our main tasks," he has said, "is to connect members to an incredible organization that's filled with opportunities for learning to lead or be a better version of yourself, with professional development opportunities, but also to have at your fingertips, a landscape of the pulse of education."

Cavazos has a long list of awards and accomplishments, including being recognized as Region 1 Superintendent of the Year in 2017. In 2016, Gov. Greg Abbott selected him to serve a five-year term on the State Board for Educator Certification.

Besides serving TASA as an executive superintendent, he has also been a superintendent-in-residence for the Holdsworth Center and a member of the UIL Executive Committee.

"Art has had a long and distinguished career in public education and we're very grateful to him for his service to TASA as an executive superintendent," said TASA Executive Director Kevin Brown. "Although he's leaving this position, he'll always be a part of the TASA family."

TASA Executive Superintendent , who serves ESC Regions 13 and 14, will also serve ESC Regions 1 and 20 until a permanent replacement is named.
