Investing More Than $500,000 in Youth Programming Across the County
(BROOME COUNTY, NY) - For the first time in 15 years, Broome County is restoring a dedicated department focused on youth development and engagement, reinforcing the County's commitment to expanding opportunities and support for children, youth, and families throughout the community.
As part of this renewed effort, Broome County has appointed Jennifer Petteys as Director of the Broome County Youth Bureau. Petteys brings decades of leadership experience in youth services, public administration, program development, and community collaboration.
Petteys previously served as Executive Director of the Montgomery County Youth Bureau, where she oversaw countywide youth programs, delinquency prevention initiatives, grant-funded services, and strategic planning efforts focused on improving outcomes for children and families. Throughout her career, she has worked closely with schools, community organizations, municipalities, and state agencies to strengthen youth programming and expand opportunities for young people.
"Investing in our youth means investing in the future of Broome County," said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar. "Restoring a department focused entirely on youth development and engagement allows us to better coordinate services, strengthen community partnerships, and continue building opportunities for young people throughout our community. Jennifer brings the experience, leadership, and passion needed to help lead these efforts forward."
Jennifer Petteys said, "When communities invest in young people, the impact is felt for generations. Restoring the Youth Bureau reflects Broome County's commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for children, youth, and families, and I'm honored to help guide that work forward. I'm excited to partner with organizations across Broome County to expand positive opportunities for youth throughout our community and help ensure they have access to safe environments, meaningful experiences, and the support systems necessary to reach their full potential. Ultimately, a good childhood lasts a lifetime."
In addition to restoring a standalone focus on youth services through the Youth Bureau, Broome County is investing more than $500,000 this year into youth-focused programming, services, and initiatives through partnerships with local organizations and municipalities.
Funding will support a broad range of youth-focused programs and services throughout Broome County, including after-school and summer programming, tutoring and academic support, youth athletics and recreation, arts and educational enrichment, mentoring initiatives, wellness programming, violence prevention efforts, and programs focused on creating safe, positive opportunities for young people and families.
The Broome County Youth Bureau will work closely with local municipalities, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to identify needs, support youth-serving programs, and help ensure resources are reaching children and families throughout Broome County.
