ERIA Convenes Technical Workshop on Hydrogen Demand and Technology in Sarawak

Kuching, 16 December 2025: ERIA, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), convened a 2-day technical workshop on hydrogen in Sarawak, Malaysia, from 15-16 December 2025. The workshop was held as part of the Joint Feasibility Study on Hydrogen Demand and Technology Assessment in Sarawak, Malaysia.

The workshop was opened by Professor Shanti Faridah binti Salleh, Director of the Institute of Sustainable and Renewable Energy (ISuRE) at UNIMAS. She outlined recent hydrogen developments in Sarawak under the state government's Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), and noted that the current study builds on earlier research undertaken by ISuRE while complementing the existing body of work on hydrogen in the state.

Dr Alloysius Joko Purwanto, Senior Energy Economist at ERIA, presented the overall framework of the ongoing study. He explained that the findings from the Joint Feasibility Study in Sarawak will serve as a case study for the broader East Asia Summit (EAS) hydrogen study, which is scheduled for publication in early 2026.

The workshop featured a series of presentations and discussions covering key components of the Joint Feasibility Study, including: (1) green hydrogen production potential; (2) hydrogen demand potential; (3) hydrogen storage, transport, and utilisation technologies; (4) techno-economic and cost-benefit analysis; and (5) strategic recommendations.

On the second day, participants undertook a site visit to the hydrogen refuelling station at the PETROS Darul Hana Multifuel Station. Representatives from the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) introduced the station's hydrogen production process, demonstrated the refuelling system and its safety features, and outlined SEDC's plans to expand Sarawak's hydrogen economy. These efforts aim to meet domestic energy demand while supporting future hydrogen exports to neighbouring countries, including Singapore, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.
