Oakland Man Sentenced for Possessing Stolen Firearms

Cody Smith stole 20 firearms during a Waterville pawn shop burglary

BANGOR, Maine: An Oakland man was sentenced on October 6, 2026, in U.S. District Court in Bangor for possessing stolen firearms.

U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann sentenced Cody Smith, 25, to two years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $6,995 in restitution. Smith pleaded guilty on May 5, 2026.

According to court records, early in the morning on August 10, 2025, Smith broke into a pawn shop in Waterville and stole 20 handguns. The break-in was captured on a video surveillance system inside the building, as well as exterior surveillance cameras at other area businesses. Within hours of the burglary, Smith was posting videos of himself on social media displaying some of the stolen firearms and admitting to the break-in.

The Waterville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
