Nurse practitioner retirement marks end of an era, but the family tradition continues

A message from the Buffalo General Medical Center MICU team

Many describe Kaleida Health as a kind of family-not the one you're born into, but one you choose. It's built in the hours we spend together each week, in small gestures like sharing coffee and life's experiences, and in the relationships that grow from daily work side by side. There's a strength to that bond-like a deep root system supporting every branch of the Kaleida Health family tree. One of those branches, well worth celebrating, is Philip Thompson, who after 40 years will be retiring from the Kaleida Health family on May 1, 2026.

To understand Phil's story, it helps to go back to 1986, when the operating room was led by the formidable Dyanne Johnson. She ran a disciplined, highly coordinated OR, balancing schedules, accommodating emergencies and making something incredibly complex feel seamless. It was there she brought her son-in-law, Philip Thompson, into the Kaleida Health family as an orderly. Phil prepared surgical suites, transported and positioned patients, delivered specimens and ensured OR readiness. It was meticulous work that shaped the precision and discipline that would define his career. And in the moments between cases, he studied, often with a nursing textbook in hand.

He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in nursing and transitioned into a medical-surgical nursing role. Not long after, his curiosity pushed him further. He began taking nurse practitioner courses simply because they interested him-before ultimately completing his family nurse practitioner degree at D'Youville College.

Phil's impact extends well beyond his own practice. He has spent years mentoring nursing students-guiding, teaching and shaping the next generation of caregivers with patience and purpose.

His steady demeanor, clinical skill and disciplined approach also defined a remarkable military career. Phil served 40 years with Kaleida Health and 29 years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and serving as a battalion chief nurse.

His commitment to care and service clearly runs deep. That legacy continued through his daughter, Gabrielle, who followed him into nursing. Together, they served as a father-daughter team in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at Buffalo General Medical Center-Phil as an APP and Gabrielle as an RN. Gabrielle has since advanced her own career, becoming a family nurse practitioner and remaining part of the Kaleida Health family tree.

There are many places to work, but today we recognize those who truly build and sustain the workplace family at Kaleida Health-those who dedicate years to caring for patients and supporting one another. We celebrate Dyanne for 35 years of service, Phil for 40, and Gabrielle for 8-but just as importantly, we recognize all of you. Your commitment, compassion and presence are what make Kaleida Health what it is-a place of strength, warmth and care.
