New TMU task force launches to support responsible AI use

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how universities work. From classrooms to research labs, AI tools are reshaping education.

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is taking action to use this technology responsibly.

Earlier this year, TMU created a leadership task force on generative AI. The group includes professors, researchers and administrators from across the university. Their job: help TMU embrace AI's benefits while protecting academic integrity and university values.

A university-wide approach

The task force has spent months studying how AI is being used at TMU. Their goal is to create clear guidelines that support innovation while ensuring responsible use.

"AI is disrupting higher education," says Sean Kheraj, vice-provost, academic and task force co-chair. "TMU is committed to leading in this space. We want our community to have the guidance and tools they need to use these technologies responsibly."

New AI website

To help, the task force launched the new AI at TMU website. The site is a central hub for information and resources. Users can find key policies, teaching guidelines and training materials. The website also showcasesTMU's research on responsible AI.

"Generative AI offers exciting opportunities ," says Mark Robertson, dean of Libraries and task force co-chair. "But it requires careful thinking. The website connects our community with the resources they need to engage with AI thoughtfully."

What's ahead

The task force continues to work with campus partners and external experts. Their final report will include recommendations for best practices and training.
