Summer fun with North Star Junior Sailing

Have you ever thought about getting your children into sailing? Learning fundamentals, embracing the challenges and gaining skills that will last a lifetime. North Star Junior Sailing offers just the program for you!

During the summer, they have sailing lessons for all ages and skill levels. Starting with the basics and focusing on comfortability, to homing in on previous skills and building knowledge. Day by day students get more equipped with the knowledge necessary to succeed on the water.

I was recently given the opportunity to visit North Star Junior Sailing and see the program in action. Let me just say, it is remarkable! The instructors, Libby, Ethan and Nycki, were very attentive and made sure that all the students felt seen and comfortable. Each student was thrilled to be there and eager to learn.

How it works

The program starts on land with classroom instruction as they follow U.S. Sailing REACH STEM and Sailing curriculum. This includes going through the different sections of the boat, wind concepts, and how to navigate the boat using the sails and tiller. They also complete fun projects, like making tin foil boats and testing the buoyancy with marbles or creating homemade wind turbines. After all, a key part of this program is making sure the students have a clear understanding of water and boat safety.

Once they get on the water in Belvidere Bay, they carry out drills and courses that help the students become more confident in their sailing abilities. Using different kinds of boats like Opti's and Laser's, I watched students go through a "figure 8" course that taught them how to maneuver around turns and right -of - ways.

On some days, the students are able to have a little extra fun by swimming around with their floaties- titled the unicorn (Felicity) and the flamingo (Fred) respectively - or by teaching them about marine health while they clean shorelines of debris on "debris day". Kids enjoy this program so much, that they come back for more and sign up for the advanced classes too.

The background

North Star Junior Sailing is a non-profit organization and is always looking for ways to help their program succeed and grow! With help from a Four County Community Foundation grant, they are able to provide students in need with sailing scholarships, as well.

Gain life-long skills and knowledge with North Star Junior Sailing. There is still time to enroll in sessions this summer, so don't miss out on the fun!
