Donors invest a record $52 million in Illinois State’s future

Illinois State University surpassed $52 million in private support during fiscal year 2026, setting a new institutional record and extending one of the strongest periods of philanthropic growth in the University's history.

The milestone caps more than a decade of remarkable momentum. Since fiscal year 2013, annual private support has grown from approximately $14 million to more than $52 million. It also marks the sixth consecutive year Illinois State has increased philanthropic support, reflecting growing confidence in the University's mission and its impact on students and communities across Illinois.

"This extraordinary milestone belongs to the thousands of alumni, friends, companies, and organizations who believe in Illinois State," said Illinois State University President Aondover Tarhule. "We are grateful for their generosity and trust. Their investment expands opportunities for students, advances academic excellence, and strengthens the University's ability to prepare future leaders, strengthen communities, and help build a stronger Illinois."

That generosity is creating measurable impact across the University. Last year alone, more than 4,500 scholarships totaling over $6 million helped Redbirds pursue their degrees while reducing financial barriers to student success.

Private support is also helping Illinois State address Illinois' most pressing workforce needs. A $2.35 million gift from the Wheeler Foundation is expanding the University's Paraprofessionals Unlocking Licensure in Special Education (PULSE) program. Since launching with 55 students in its first cohort, the program has grown to 120 students in its fourth cohort and now partners with more than 136 school districts to prepare licensed special education teachers across the state.

"Philanthropy has become an accelerant for Illinois State," said Pat Vickerman, vice president for University Advancement. "It allows us to move faster, scale ideas that work, and invest in opportunities that create lasting value for our students and the state. While setting a record is significant, our greatest measure of success is the lives we change and the impact we deliver."

Illinois State's long-term philanthropic capacity to support students and academic excellence continues to grow. Since 2013, the Illinois State University Foundation endowment has increased from approximately $78 million to more than $270 million, providing lasting resources for scholarships, faculty excellence, innovative programs, and strategic priorities. As Illinois State looks ahead, this record-setting year represents thousands of people choosing to invest in students, strengthen academic excellence, address workforce needs, and support ideas and people that will shape Illinois' future.
