Leader Schumer Floor Remarks Commemorating The Anniversary Of The 1998 Capitol Police Shooting

Washington, D.C. - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke on the Senate floor to honor the lives of Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut of the United States Capitol Police, who both made the ultimate sacrifice defending the Capitol building in 1998. Below are Senator Schumer's remarks, which can also be viewed here:

Tomorrow, tomorrow marks 28 years since when Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut of the United States Capitol Police gave their lives defending our Capitol.

They showed tremendous heroism that day - one I remember all too well. They faced grave danger with courage, made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our Capitol, the people within, and the democracy this building represents.

For that, they will always have, always have our gratitude, and so will all our Capitol Police officers who work so hard to keep us safe.
