NYC PARKS BREAKS GROUND ON $13 MILLION RECONSTRUCTION OF RUPPERT PARK ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE

The two-phase reconstruction will improve accessibility and add an elaborate playground, new entrances, public restroom, and dog run

NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura joined elected officials today to announce the start of a $13 million, two-phase reconstruction of Ruppert Park on the Upper East Side. The project will improve accessibility throughout the one-acre park, introduce an imaginative new playground inspired by the site's unique topography, and expand open space and recreational opportunities for the community while preserving the park's distinctive landscape and existing trees.

"Ruppert Park is an important neighborhood resource for families, children, and residents of the Upper East Side," said NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura. "This reconstruction will make the park more accessible and welcoming while creating exciting new opportunities for children to play, explore, and connect with nature. We are investing in public spaces that serve our communities and ensure New Yorkers of all abilities can enjoy their parks."

Ruppert Park features approximately 90 existing trees and a 15-foot change in elevation. The redesign will make the park more accessible by replacing the existing central access point near Second Avenue with two new entrances and creating connected, ADA-accessible routes throughout the park.

The redesigned playground will draw inspiration from the park's landscape, combining adventurous play equipment with accessible pathways and striking views. An accessible path will lead children toward the park's highest point, ending at a twisting slide embedded in a natural rock scramble. An ADA-accessible bridge will connect the path to a play structure designed as a treehouse, where a wraparound catwalk will offer 360-degree views of the surrounding park.

The design will also incorporate lush plantings, expanded open space, a dog run, and areas for both active recreation and quiet relaxation, creating a park experience that celebrates the site's natural features while improving access for visitors of all ages and abilities.

Phase One construction is anticipated to be completed in summer 2027. Phase Two will include construction of a new public restroom building and a multi-use space, is anticipated to begin in fall 2027 and be completed in spring 2029.

The $13 million reconstruction is funded by the Manhattan Borough Presidents Office, City Council, and the Mayor's Office.
