Nigerian Alien Indicted for Illegally Voting

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A federal grand jury in Topeka returned an indictment charging a Nigerian alien with falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen to illegally vote in elections. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services provided valuable assistance to the investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas made the announcement.

According to court documents, George Olawunmi Johnson, 67, formerly of Olathe, Kansas, is charged with one count of false claim to U.S. citizenship, one count of false claim to U.S. citizenship in order to vote, one count of fraudulent election conduct, and one count of voting by an alien in a federal election.

In February 2010, Johnson allegedly falsely represented himself as a U.S. citizen while registering to vote in Johnson County, Kansas. In November 2024, Johnson allegedly cast a ballot in Kansas that included candidates for the offices of U.S. president, vice president, Senate, and House of Representatives after falsely certifying that he was eligible to vote as a U.S. citizen when he is in fact a permanent resident.

Homeland Security Investigations is investigating the case. USCIS aided the investigation.
