The five programming languages shaping the future of AI

Madrid, September 11, 2026 - Artificial intelligence is changing how software is built, but speed is no longer the only priority. As AI-generated code becomes increasingly common, organizations must also ensure that the software they create is secure, reliable, and built to scale.

According to UST, a leading provider of AI solutions and digital transformation services, five programming languages are emerging as especially important in the AI era: TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, and C++. Each plays a critical role in helping organizations develop, validate, and operate software in environments where AI now contributes to a significant portion of the codebase.

The business impact is already substantial. GitHub estimates that AI development tools could contribute $1.5 trillion to global GDP by 2030. At the same time, Stack Overflow reports that 84% of developers already use, or plan to use, AI-powered coding tools. While adoption continues to grow, confidence in the accuracy and quality of AI-generated code remains a concern for many development teams.

As a result, the focus is shifting from simply generating code faster to ensuring that code is trustworthy, maintainable, and aligned with business requirements.

"The conversation has moved beyond experimenting with prompts and proof-of-concepts," said Roberto Álvarez, AI Office Director at UST Spain and LATAM. " Organizations are now focused on how to integrate AI into software development in a controlled and secure way. AI can generate code in seconds, but that doesn't remove the need for oversight, engineering discipline, and sound architectural decisions."

His caution is supported by recent findings. According to analysis from Apiiro, teams using AI coding assistants generated 10 times more security issues and 153% more architectural flaws than teams relying on traditional development approaches.

Programming languages that matter most in the AI era

Ahead of Programmer's Day, celebrated annually on September 13, Álvarez identifies five languages that are particularly valuable in an AI-assisted development environment. These are not necessarily the most popular programming languages overall, but they are among the most important for building reliable software when AI is involved in the development process.

1. TypeScript

TypeScript has become one of the most influential languages in modern software development. According to GitHub's Octoverse 2025 report, it surpassed both Python and JavaScript to become the platform's most widely used language by monthly contributors.

One reason for its growing importance is its robust type system. By enforcing stricter rules during development, TypeScript helps detect many of the mistakes and inconsistencies that can appear in AI-generated code before that code reaches production. Since type-related issues account for a large share of compilation failures in AI-generated applications, TypeScript serves as an effective safeguard against common coding errors.

2. Python

Python remains the foundation of the modern AI ecosystem. It continues to dominate machine learning, data science, and model development thanks to its extensive libraries and developer-friendly syntax.

However, Python's role has evolved significantly. What began as the preferred language for experimentation and proof-of-concept work has become the orchestration layer for many enterprise AI systems. Today, Python is often responsible for coordinating models, workflows, and integrations, while computationally intensive processes are delegated to lower-level technologies optimized for performance.

3. Rust

As software security becomes a top priority, Rust has gained significant attention for its ability to prevent entire categories of vulnerabilities before applications are deployed.

Rust's memory-safety model eliminates many of the issues commonly associated with software written in traditional systems languages such as C and C++. By identifying potential problems during compilation, Rust helps development teams build secure and reliable applications from the ground up.

4. Go

Go has become one of the defining languages of cloud-native development. It powers many of the technologies underpinning modern infrastructure, including Kubernetes, Docker, and Prometheus.

Its lightweight architecture and concurrency model make it particularly effective for building highly scalable services. As organizations deploy AI workloads across increasingly complex cloud environments, Go plays an important role in ensuring those systems remain efficient and resilient.

5. C++

If Python is often considered the face of AI development, C++ remains the engine that powers it behind the scenes.

Many of the components responsible for high-performance computing, graphics processing, and large-scale AI calculations are built using C++. The language continues to provide the speed and efficiency required to train and run advanced AI systems, making it indispensable despite the emergence of newer alternatives.

The growing importance of human judgment

According to Álvarez, advances in AI will continue to reduce many of today's coding mistakes. However, the nature of software risk is changing rather than disappearing.

Future systems will be better at catching syntax and compilation errors automatically. The greater challenges will increasingly involve business logic, design choices, and architectural decisions that require context and judgment.

"AI can help identify issues, but it cannot determine business intent or make strategic decisions on behalf of an organization," Álvarez explained. "When a model reviews code, it generated itself, it often carries the same blind spots that produced the original result."

That reality is reshaping the role of software developers. As AI takes on more coding tasks, developers will spend more time reviewing designs, validating solutions, and ensuring quality across increasingly complex systems.

It also raises important questions about how the next generation of engineers should be trained. Historically, developers developed architectural judgment by writing and debugging code themselves. As AI assumes more of that foundational work, organizations will need new approaches to cultivating those skills.

"Soon, writing code faster will be the easy part," Álvarez concluded. "The real competitive advantage will come from knowing how to build systems that are secure, resilient, and designed for long-term success. AI is a powerful accelerator, but people remain responsible for the decisions that ultimately determine software quality."
