TxDOT to Remove Bridge Over 17th & 18th Streets

TxDOT to Remove Bridge Over 17th & 18th Streets

Published on September 15, 2025

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is continuing its work on Interstate 35 with more bridge demolitions over the next few days. These closures will allow crews to safely remove the northbound I-35 bridges over 17th and 18th Streets. Crews have already removed the northbound bridge over New Road and traffic is flowing again at that intersection.

  • TxDOT plans to close lanes on 18th Street (eastbound and the turnaround under I-35) from 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 16 to 7 a.m. Friday, September 19.

  • Additionally, crews plan to close lanes on 17th Street (westbound and the turnaround under I-35) from 7 p.m. Sunday, September 21 to 7 a.m. Wednesday, September 24.

I-35 main lanes and frontage roads will remain open in both directions.

Detours

  • 18th Street Detour: Motorists traveling southbound on the I-35 frontage road should continue past 18th Street on the frontage road to Valley Mills Drive and use the turnaround at Valley Mills Drive. Then, take the northbound I-35 frontage road and turn right onto eastbound 18th Street.

  • 17th Street Detour: Motorists traveling northbound on the I-35 frontage road should continue past 17th Street to 12th Street and use the turnaround at 12th Street. Then, take the southbound I-35 frontage road and turn right onto westbound 17th Street.

Reminder, speed limits are reduced to 55 mph in the work zones. Slow down, eliminate all distractions, and always pay attention! All schedules are dependent on weather and other factors.

My35 Waco South Project Overview

Construction on the south portion of Interstate 35 in Waco started in February 2025 and will run through early 2029. The project focuses on the stretch between 12th Street and Highway 6.

The $234 million project will upgrade three miles of I-35 and will result in:

  • Eight wider main lanes (four lanes in each direction)
  • Continuous frontage roads with redesigned ramps
  • Enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety with new sidewalks
  • Rebuilt crossings with U-turn lanes
  • Utility and drainage improvements

This project follows the successful completion of the I-35 Waco north section between North Loop 340 and 12th Street, which was finished in November 2022. Once completed, this project will mark the final piece of the I-35 reconstruction project through Waco.

During construction, please be sure to drive carefully and obey all traffic signs. We appreciate your patience as these improvements will benefit drivers for years to come.
