Some City of Riverside Libraries Closing on Sundays Starting in April
Closures will be at libraries with fewest visitors; staff will shift to busiest days to improve service
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Some libraries in the City of Riverside where attendance is low will no longer be open on Sundays starting April 12. The changes are part of cost-saving measures included in the 2026-28 city budget.
The Sunday closures will take place at the Arlanza, SSgt Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca, SPC Jesus S. Duran Eastside at Lincoln Park, La Sierra, and Marcy locations. Staff resources will be redirected to the busiest days of the week -- Tuesday through Saturday - and patrons will continue to have access to online library resources, eBooks, and Book Lockers, which are always available.
The Arlington, Main, and Orange Terrace libraries will remain open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. These are the busiest library locations on Sundays and are spread across the city, ensuring there will be an open library every Sunday within 4 miles of a now-closed facility.
Sunday usage at all locations makes up only 11% of the total weekly usage, and 63 percent of that Sunday usage occurs at the Main, Orange Terrace, and Arlington locations. Usage is much lower at other locations. For example, the Arlanza, SSgt Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca, and SPC Jesus S. Duran Eastside libraries average fewer than 10 customers per hour.
