Columbia Police respond to early morning disturbance on Walnut Street

At 1:24 a.m., July 26, Columbia Police Department officers on patrol near Ninth and East Walnut streets became aware of a large disturbance involving several people fighting. Officers requested emergency assistance, and additional officers responded.

Seven people were arrested on various charges, including peace disturbance by fighting, third-degree assault (felony) involving a special victim (police officer), resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant.

One officer was struck in the head and evaluated by medical personnel but was not transported to a hospital. The person accused of striking the officer was arrested on a charge of felony assault (special victim). Another person attempted to flee the scene and was apprehended after a brief chase.

Because several of those arrested were exposed to pepper spray, medical personnel assisted with decontamination at CPD. Each person declined additional medical treatment.

CPD policy requires every use of force by officers to be reviewed through the chain of command, and a thorough review has begun in this case. The review will include available reports, body-worn camera and in-car camera footage, and it is ongoing. CPD will follow state law and department policy during the review process.
